Music Video Conventions

Music videos follow certain conventions. Some of these include having a range of different shot types so that it gives the audience a very in depth view of the setting and to add emphasis to the artist involved in the music video. They also include many close ups to show emotions as well as movement of the artists lips to reflect the words of the song; for instance you see a range of shot types to show emphasis of Macklemore in this video below.

Another convention commonly found in music videos is to include an interesting costume that will send out messages to the audience to appeal to them in some way. The costume will usually go with scene of the music video. For example in Katy Perry's video it is set in a jungle and we see the costumes to be like safari costumes to fit with the scene.

The mise en scene of a music video is also a convention in music videos. The Mise en scene refers to the performers, props and setting. Usually music videos somewhere a bit more unfamiliar to everyday life  to make it seem more intriguing to the audience. The mise en scene allows you to understand the feeling from the song and can strongly suggest the genre of the song. Here for example from the setting we can tell that it is a sad song as Chris brown is isolated in quite a deserted place. Also from his actions we can tell that the song is a sombre song.

Self & Peer Radio Station Logo Evaluations

From these evaluations I gained information based upon my logos designs. They helped me to get more ideas on how to improve my logos and also ensured me on the parts which worked well. I made improvements on all logos; for example for all of the titles on the logo, I added an outer glow to give it a more bright and youthful appearance. Also i added decoration to some of the logos , such as the Mixx logo to make it appeal to target audiences more strongly.

Mixx Fm Evaluation

Unit 54 C4 Evaluation of logos

Mixx FM.

1.  I think Mixx would represent pop music and all the music which would be in the Top 40 charts. This due to it being called Mixx, it tells me that it is a mix of music, which the top 40 charts are. Also mix can sound quite old but the fact that it has 2 x’s makes it look more funky and modernises it and this why I choose to have this genre of music for this station.

2. I think that the target audience for Mixx FM would be a mass audience such as from 12 years & above as the radio will play the top 40 latest hits charts. This means the music playing will be very popular and will be able to appeal to a wide range of people. Although it more aimed towards the younger audience below 30, people above 30 may still enjoy this type of music.

3.By appealing to the young audience I used bright colours such as blue and pink. Also I used blue to appeal to the male audience and pink to appeal to the female audience. I wanted it to look vibrant and bright to reflect the music genre of pop as the music usually creates a happy vibe and the mood created from this logo is a happy, positive mood.

I think the stations competitors would be stations such as Kiss, Capital as these play the latest chart music which is the same as Mixx so therefore it would be in competition with my station. Also these stations are highly popular with the target audience age group that Mixx targets.

I wanted to create a fashionable and attractive look to the design to represent the latest tracks which Mixx will be playing. I wanted my design to appeal to both male and females to attract the mass target audience. Also I can see it being played at small gatherings of people such as at barbecues so I wanted to give it a attractive but relaxed look to it.

For this logo I wanted to create a attractive and professional logo. To do this I wanted to have an effective colour scheme to link with the target audience and a look of a professional chart music radio station.

First of all I created the same shape as my other designs. To do this I used the shape tool to design a rectangle. I then found an image of a black CD and imported it in to Photoshop and placed it underneath the Shape layer to make it look as though it was a CD going into a CD player.

Afterwards I downloaded a font which looked young and energetic. To do this I found a font off of dafont.com to create the Title of the radio station. To accomplish the young and energetic look to the font I added an outer glow to it to give it a neon light look which is related to entertainment. I also have a DJ on their and music bars which was a dingbat font downloaded off of dafont.com. The decoration is to show how DJ will be playing the pop music on the stations

I then made the colour scheme of pink and different contrasts of blue using the fill tool. These colours, I felt were the best to represent pop music and to help to target both males and females.

I then added created a circle to place the ow logo in the top corner and added an outer glow to this as well. I also added the bevel and emboss tool to the logo give it a 3D effect

I feel the most successful part of this logo would be its overall appearance. I feel that it looks clean and modern as well as all the colours work well together to show the target audience. The appearance is clearly aimed towards a younger audience. The design suits the family of my designs as again it shows a CD being inserted into a CD player. The glow around the font add energy.

When I asked my audience they felt that it suited the genre however they also said in some ways it could be misleading to be an electronic music genre such as drum and bass due to the decorations I have placed on the logo. However they said that it clearly appealed to both Male and Female audience however they said it would mainly appeal to a younger target audience due to the fashionable look of the logo.

When creating this logo I developed Photoshop skills such as adding layer style such as bevel&emboss and outer glows to different parts of the logo. This helps to make the logos look much more modern and professional.

To make it better I could use different decoration to make it much more clearer that the genre of the station is pop music and chart music as from my feedback it said about it not being so clear of what the genre can be.

Pulse FM Evaluation

Unit 54 C4 Evaluation of logos

Pulse FM

For Pulse I felt that it would represent Electronic music such as house, drum&bass, dub-step etc. This is because the songs all have a lively beat which can relate to the pulse of a human body which acts as a beat. Also 'Pulse' suggest something quite intense due to the 'p' sound. Electronic music usually is fast an intense when in the core of the beat.
I tried to aim to appeal to the target audience through my logos design; for example I choose to have a colour theme of light electric green against a dark black background to try represent the electronic music using energetic colours to relate to the upbeat vibe which these songs create. I also added outer glow to the font to appeal to the young target audience as it would add life to the font and remind them of a neon light from somewhere such as a nightclub.
I think that the stations competitors would be one of Kiss FM's radio station 'Kiss Fresh' as they play a range of electronic music throughout the day and night. Also they are a well established radio station and have a lot of advertising, which would make it tough to attract an audience over Kiss Fresh. Kiss fresh will have a very similar target audience due to it being a similar station, so therefore I would need to make my logo have a stronger appeal to the target audience.
I wanted to create a live energetic look to the logo to reflect the genre of music and to appeal to the more energetic younger viewers who enjoy to party. The colours which I have used reflect a similar look to a dark nightclub with green disco lasers shining around the club. I done this so that the target audience would be able to relate to the nightclub scene and recognise this through the logo and then be able to understand what genre Pulse plays.
First of all I created the unique shape of my family of logos. To do this I created a rectangle using the shape tool and held down shift to keep the proportions the same. I then imported an image of a plain CD to give it the look of a CD player. I used the magic wand too lto remove the background of the imported image.

I also used the pen tool to define a new custom shape to create shapes such as the red insert symbol on the rectangle shape. As well as the green pulses which appear on the CD. I also added shapes such as the love heart. I then imported an image of a green electric pulse and placed it on the box, as well as using the magic wand tool to remove the background. I then added an outer glow to the layer to make it look live.

I also created a circle to place the ow symbol logo within using the same font. To then give it a 3D effect I placed a bevel & emboss effect on to various parts of the design such as the rectangle.

The most successful part of this logo was the colour scheme. I felt it linked in very well and is easy to determine the genre of music from the colours and decorations; they reflect a lively mood and can reflect a nightclub atmosphere. This was successful as i discovered from my feedback.

From my feedback I got told that this was my most successful logo at appealing to its target audience out of the 3 logos. They said that the design made it clear it was for an intense music genre that would have a upbeat feel to it. Also they were able to depict it being a young target audience due to the genre that the logo represented.

From this logo I improved on the skill of how to define new custom shape tools and being able to use these on Photoshop. By doing this I have become more skilled and have developed on using more difficult tools.
To improve I could maybe make the shapes of the pulses look cleaner and make the overall appearance have more of a feminine look to it as at the moment it appeals more to men.

VIP FM Evaluation

Unit 54 C4 Evaluation of Logos

V.I.P FM
I think that VIP represents the Hip Hop and R&B genre. I see this radio station playing songs from artists such as Chris brown, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Drake and many more. VIP stands for very important person and this made me think of Hip hop/ R&B artists as they relate to themselves as having a very ‘gangster’ style of life within their music. They also make themselves seem very important through their fashion such as the big gold jewellery which they wear and expensive high branded clothing. This makes them seem very important and celebrity like so therefore relates to the name of VIP.

The target audience is young 15-25 year olds. This is because the genre of Hip hop/R&B can involve lyrics which can be considered rude and involve factors such as Relationships, Drugs and Violence which would be less approved by an older audience; where as a young audience would find it more acceptable due to their young lifestyle. Also I think that the genre of music is mainly listened to by 15-25 year olds. My colours of black and gold relate to the fashion of the artists of gold on black clothes which will then be recognisable by the target audience.

I wanted my target audience to notice the logo through the colours and its bling. The black and gold can appeal to them through their fashion taken from the artists. Many wear black dark clothes with bling such as gold chains and watches etc. The font contains a graffiti style which to will relate to the younger target audience as they are going to be more intrigued by a graffiti font compared to an older person.

I think that the competitors for VIP will be Kiss, Choice and BBC 1 Radio Xtra. This is due to them playing similar music genres to VIP and having a similar target audience. However VIP will focus on the big artists and play only Hip Hop and R&B 24/7 so the audience will know exactly the type of music they will be listening to unlike stations such as kiss which will play a pop music and other genres as well.

With my design I wanted to create a CD player box. With this I would have a box and half of the CD hanging out waiting to be inserted. Within the design I would customize it to suit the genre and appeal to the target audience. With the VIP logo I wanted to create a clean and effective logo that would relate to the extreme lifestyle that Hip hop/R&B artist live. Through this it would rub off on the target audience, as they would strive to be like their favourite artists and therefore find the logo appealing.

When creating this logo I first of all created the shape of the rectangle which would be the CD box. I then inserted the image of the plain Black CD being inserted into the rectangle box, as well as removing the background from the imported image using the magic wand tool.

I then decided to look at different graffiti fonts off of dafont.com and the picked the one which I liked best. I choose this style of font to appeal to the young target audience as graffiti is more familiar with young people rather than old people. I then used the font to create the title.

Afterwards i downloaded an image of a crown to represent the VIP station and insinuate that it plays Hip Hop music. I used the magic wand tool to remove the background from the image and then free transformed it to place it in the centre of the rectangle.  I then added an image of photography flashes to represent paparazzi following the celebrities to VIP FM.

I then added the bevel emboss effect to the logo, as well as creating an outer glow to the typography on the logo

With my logo, I am pleased with the shape of my design. I feel as though the CD player design is very clever and effective as many people can relate to it. I like the image of the crown with the flashes of cameras around it. I feel as though it links with the name of the station, VIP, very well as the crown shows importance and the flashes represent paparazzi taking photographs which can show the celebrity element.

When I asked my audience for feedback they managed to recognise that it would be some sort of hip hop or grime music due to the colour combination of black and gold. They also said that the font helped to determine the young target audience due to it being graffiti style.

While developing this logo I managed to improve my designing skills based on designing it to fit a target audience. This is because I found VIP the most challenging to present as a logo which would both show the music genre and appeal to its target audience.

To make this piece even better I could use a different image which would relate to the genre a little clearer such as a gold face with a silver tooth with a chain hanging from their neck. Also I could add a outer glow to the font to give it a neon effect to make the font appeal to the target audience.
