Pulse FM Evaluation

Unit 54 C4 Evaluation of logos

Pulse FM

For Pulse I felt that it would represent Electronic music such as house, drum&bass, dub-step etc. This is because the songs all have a lively beat which can relate to the pulse of a human body which acts as a beat. Also 'Pulse' suggest something quite intense due to the 'p' sound. Electronic music usually is fast an intense when in the core of the beat.
I tried to aim to appeal to the target audience through my logos design; for example I choose to have a colour theme of light electric green against a dark black background to try represent the electronic music using energetic colours to relate to the upbeat vibe which these songs create. I also added outer glow to the font to appeal to the young target audience as it would add life to the font and remind them of a neon light from somewhere such as a nightclub.
I think that the stations competitors would be one of Kiss FM's radio station 'Kiss Fresh' as they play a range of electronic music throughout the day and night. Also they are a well established radio station and have a lot of advertising, which would make it tough to attract an audience over Kiss Fresh. Kiss fresh will have a very similar target audience due to it being a similar station, so therefore I would need to make my logo have a stronger appeal to the target audience.
I wanted to create a live energetic look to the logo to reflect the genre of music and to appeal to the more energetic younger viewers who enjoy to party. The colours which I have used reflect a similar look to a dark nightclub with green disco lasers shining around the club. I done this so that the target audience would be able to relate to the nightclub scene and recognise this through the logo and then be able to understand what genre Pulse plays.
First of all I created the unique shape of my family of logos. To do this I created a rectangle using the shape tool and held down shift to keep the proportions the same. I then imported an image of a plain CD to give it the look of a CD player. I used the magic wand too lto remove the background of the imported image.

I also used the pen tool to define a new custom shape to create shapes such as the red insert symbol on the rectangle shape. As well as the green pulses which appear on the CD. I also added shapes such as the love heart. I then imported an image of a green electric pulse and placed it on the box, as well as using the magic wand tool to remove the background. I then added an outer glow to the layer to make it look live.

I also created a circle to place the ow symbol logo within using the same font. To then give it a 3D effect I placed a bevel & emboss effect on to various parts of the design such as the rectangle.

The most successful part of this logo was the colour scheme. I felt it linked in very well and is easy to determine the genre of music from the colours and decorations; they reflect a lively mood and can reflect a nightclub atmosphere. This was successful as i discovered from my feedback.

From my feedback I got told that this was my most successful logo at appealing to its target audience out of the 3 logos. They said that the design made it clear it was for an intense music genre that would have a upbeat feel to it. Also they were able to depict it being a young target audience due to the genre that the logo represented.

From this logo I improved on the skill of how to define new custom shape tools and being able to use these on Photoshop. By doing this I have become more skilled and have developed on using more difficult tools.
To improve I could maybe make the shapes of the pulses look cleaner and make the overall appearance have more of a feminine look to it as at the moment it appeals more to men.
